That afternoon, Sam could barely concentrate enough to catch every couple of words. Jess’s run-in with the lamppost could not be a coincidence. Was it a message to him? A message to get her away from here?

Sam looked to his notes, tapping the pen against his Moleskine pad. That look on Jessie’s face as he left her yesterday was enough to wrench his guts into a sailor’s knot. Could he tell her the truth? At least as it stood now, time might win her back. Time might dull the ache of him being a stupid, selfish teen and walking away from her friendship when she most needed him. But if she knew the real reason, he doubted she could ever forgive that.

He gripped his pen so hard that his fingers ached beneath the cheap Bic plastic. No, it was unforgivable. He was unforgivable.

And it didn’t matter even if she did accept his apology. She needed to get out of Portland—not be planning her future here. Cass’s death had made that crystal clear. What Sam needed more than anything were the images from inside that damn book.

The tip of the pen tapped rapidly against his notepad as he flicked it between his fingers. Damn, he could use a smoke right about now.

“Detective?”

Dr. Moore’s wife looked at Sam, a worried expression marring her delicate features. He darted a glance to Matt, who was glaring at him in response, mouthing the words what the fuck to him from behind Mrs. Moore.

Shit. This was exactly why Jessie being in town was terrible. It was bad for him, bad for his job, and dangerous for Jess.

Sam cleared his throat. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Moore. Could you say that last part again?”

She looked back to Matt, twisting her hands in her lap. “I said, I feel awful about Rich. In all honesty, I never liked him much. He was always wanting to go out with Marc—I think it’s the difference between single friends and married friends.” She scrunched her nose, flipping silky blond hair behind one ear. “Different priorities, you know?”

Sam refrained from rolling his eyes. “Did you feel as though he was a bad influence on your husband? Did you and Rich ever get into any fights?”

“Oh, no, nothing like that,” she said, shaking her head. Her pearl necklace clacked with the movement and she fiddled with the top buttons of her cardigan. Jesus, she looked like something out of The Stepford Wives.

“We heard that Rich enjoyed company a lot of nights,” Matt began, shifting his gaze from Sam to Mrs. Moore.

She shrugged, arranging some items on the coffee table, fluffing a vase full of peonies. “Oh? I wouldn’t know. I was never invited to join them on their boys’ nights.”

“So, Marc never talked about Dr. Brown’s paid escorts?”

“What?” Her voice was suddenly shrill and she no longer cared about the bowl of flowers being perfectly arranged. “When? When did they hire escorts?”

“We can’t be sure, ma’am.” Matt eyed Sam from across the room and though silent, his communication was blatantly obvious.
